Kindergarten at Rye Country Day School
- Focuses on the total development of the child - social,
emotional, physical, cognitive, and language.
- Establishes a climate and plan that specifically
develops feelings of security and a sense of independence
and individuality.
- Provides guidance for the child as he or she learns to
relate to others and to develop warm human relationships.
- Consists of experiences within the child's range of
interests and competencies so that there are many
opportunities for successes that contribute to his or her
sense of self-worth.
Language Arts and Children's Literature
Through many varied experiences our children realize not only
skill development in the areas of listening, speaking, reading
and writing, but also the beauty and function of language in
communication.
Language Development and Literacy
Children are provided many opportunities to see how reading and
writing are useful before they are instructed in letter names,
sounds, and word identification. Basic skills develop when they
are meaningful to children. An abundance of these activities is
provided to develop language and literacy through meaningful
experience: listening to and reading stories and poems, taking
field trips, dictating stories, a print rich environment,
talking informally with other children and adults, and
experimenting with writing, with drawing, and inventive
spelling.
Social Science/Health
With first hand experiences the children gain understanding in
several areas of the social sciences. The content of our social
studies experience is based on the interests, needs, backgrounds
and developmental levels of each student. We have a deep
commitment to environmental education. We are also committed to
developing an anti-biased curriculum and providing meaningful
multicultural experiences for our children. In science we focus
on animals, objects and events in the child's natural
environment. We believe that children need to have many
opportunities to explore and interact with their world.
Mathematics
We have developed an activity-centered mathematics program for
young children. The goal of our mathematics program is to
develop understanding and insight of the patterns of mathematics
through the use of concrete materials. We believe that real
mathematical learning involves insight and understanding and the
ability to solve new problems.
Fine Arts
Our integrated approach to Art allows children the freedom to
experiment with a variety of materials and techniques based on
their interests. Art production is process oriented and involves
two dimensional activities such as painting and printmaking as
well as three dimensional projects like sculpture, weaving and
woodworking. The children learn about famous artists and art
styles and develop an appreciation for art through discussion
and critique sessions.
Creative Movement, song, dance and theater are incorporated into
our curriculum on a daily basis.
