Our Preschool Program at Rye Country Day School provides a
safe and nurturing environment which promotes the physical,
social, emotional and cognitive development of young children.
We believe that learning occurs as a result of the interaction
between the child's thoughts and rich experiences with
materials, ideas and people. The experiences we provide match
the child's developing abilities and challenge the child's
interest and understanding. Our integrative approach focuses on
the process of learning, giving children the tools which help
them become successful and responsible learners.
By meeting the children at their individual levels, by involving
them actively in their learning, and by celebrating their
growth, we help to build a positive self-esteem. Each child
becomes an integral part in a community of learners. This
community of learners is in turn nurtured by the cooperative
efforts of teachers and parents.
Early Literacy
Through many varied experiences our children begin to explore
and experience the beauty and function of language. Children are
provided many opportunities to see how reading and writing are
useful before they are instructed in letter names, sounds and
word identification. An abundance of activities are provided to
develop language and literacy through meaningful experience:
listening to and reading stories and poems, taking field trips,
dictating stories, enjoying a print rich environment, talking
informally with other children and adults, and experimenting
with early writing.
Social Science/Health
With first hand experiences the children gain understanding in
several areas of the social sciences. The content of our social
studies experience is based on the interests, needs, backgrounds
and developmental levels of each student. We have a deep
commitment to environmental education. We are also committed to
developing an anti-biased curriculum and providing meaningful
multicultural experiences for our children. In science we focus
on animals, objects and events in the child's natural
environment. We believe that children need to have many
opportunities to explore and interact with their world.
Mathematics
The goal of our mathematics program is to develop understanding
and insight of the patterns of mathematics through the use of
concrete materials. Mathematics activities are naturally woven
throughout our curriculum.
Fine Arts
Our integrated approach to Art allows children the freedom to
experiment with a variety of materials and techniques based on
their interests. Art production is process oriented and involves
two dimensional activities such as painting and printmaking as
well as three dimensional projects like sculpture, weaving and
woodworking. Creative Movement, song, dance and theater are
incorporated into our curriculum on a daily basis.
